Examples of Good Practice from Elizabethtown College
Center for Global Citizenship
Elizabethtown College has established a Center for Global Citizenship with a three-fold mission of promoting a) global education, b) civic engagement, and c) peacemaking. In global education, the Center coordinates study abroad (about 250 students per year) and supports international students studying at Elizabethtown (about 75 students per year). Promoting civic engagement, the center coordinates service learning and projects of community engagement involving more than 1000 students per year. Peacemaking activities include management of the Colloquium on Peacemaking (see below) and the Alumni Peace Fellowship, as well as the organization of lectures and panels to complement the College’s Peace Studies academic minor.
Colloquium on Peacemaking and Global Citizenship
Supported by a generous endowment gift from a college alumna, Elizabethtown established a Colloquium on Peacemaking and Global Citizenship. The Colloquium has three elements: a) an annual lecture on peacemaking (Mary Robinson in 2007, F. W. de Klerk in 2008); b) seminars on global citizenship, including academic courses, lectures and panels; and c) workshops on conflict resolution for students, faculty and staff to build the skills of peacemaking.
