Examples of Good Practice from Pennsylvania State University - DuBois Campus

A Framework to Foster Diversity

Penn State University began A Framework to Foster Diversity at Penn State, a strategic planning initiative, in 1998 to foster diversity across its 24 campuses. The first Plan guided 1998-2003. The second phase is 2004-2009 and progress has been made in the seven Challenges which include developing a shared and inclusive understanding of diversity, creating a welcoming campus climate, recruiting students, faculty and staff, developing curriculum that fosters intercultural and international competencies and finally addressing leadership and management to coordinate organizational change to support diversity goals.

Student Government Association

The Student Government Association (SGA) on the DuBois campus provides many opportunities to help students develop their leadership skills in the area of civic responsibility. One of the most significant is through the more than 22 student clubs on the campus. In the past few years, each of the clubs has taken on providing some type of service in the community. Activities range from hosting adults 55 or older for a dinner and dance on the campus, to raising money for social service agencies such as “Habitat for Humanity”, “The Make a Wish Foundation”, “THON” to support pediatric cancer research to traveling to areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina to help people clean up their property and repair their homes. Students have provided over 10,000 volunteer hours on these and other events to help others.
