Examples of Good Practice from Yerevan State Linguistic University
One of the innovations for educating for diversity and democracy in Armenia is the active participation of the students in the governance of higher education at the Yerevan State Linguistic University. The legal conditions for this have been established by Law on Education (1999), according to Article 28. This means, that at least 25% of all the university management structures are student representatives, who take part in making any decision concerning the education. Students are represented in the Scientific boards of universities, and they have full rights to discuss and make offers concerning the teaching methodology. So students are considered full partners in higher education governance in Armenia. Student organizations work hard to identify the real studying and living conditions of the students and try to stress the attention to solving the actual problems, so that they can successfully complete their studies within an appropriate period of time without obstacles related to their social and economic background.
Over the past decade, the higher educational system in Armenia has been fundamentally transformed. The Law on Higher and Postgraduate Professional Education introduces the new ideas aimed at constructing a modern model of Quality Assurance, and Self-Assessment is a component of QA. The mechanism of Self Assessment in Armenia is being developed nowadays, and students are also represented in self-assessment bodies of universities. They take part in assessment of university administration, teaching staff and methodology of teaching.
